Claremont : Housing Revision Advances

An ordinance that will strengthen the city’s land use and development code was tentatively approved by the City Council on Tuesday.
The revision, hammered out in two public study sessions in September and November, is designed to preserve the “unique character of Claremont’s residential neighborhoods” by keeping new residential development compatible with the existing neighborhoods.
The ordinance targets size to control the building of excessively large houses and additions. The code amendment also puts size limits on accessory structures, known as “granny flats,” to curb illegal conversions.
The ordinance will return for final adoption on Dec. 10.
