OUTLOOK
Second-year coach Flores has worked his team hard to turn the program around; he hopes the effort will pay off this season with some positive results. Stricter discipline, weight training, basketball camp and more emphasis on conditioning are several of the key ingredients he hopes can finally produce the aggressive play and winning attitude needed to succeed at Western. The Pioneers return seven lettermen, including four starters from last season’s 7-17 team. Included in that group are several outstanding athletes. Tran (9.3 points per game) was the Orange League long jump champion last spring and Gibson (7.6 points) won the 100-meter dash at the league meet, so the Pioneers should have enough speed to match anyone. Collins and Watley, both 5-11, and Gallagher (5-9), up from the junior varsity, are being counted on for improved rebounding. Flores says discipline is slowly taking hold, but the Pioneers still need to learn how to win, especially in the close games. As usual, he expects the Orange League race to be a contest for second place behind Brea-Olinda, with his Pioneers in contention with Valencia and Savanna.
