GM Closes Van Nuys Plant Until Jan. 2

General Motors Corp. says it is temporarily closing its Van Nuys assembly plant through December because of sluggish car sales.
The plant shut down on Thanksgiving Day and will not resume production until Jan. 2, the company said. The plant is GM’s source for the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird sports cars.
GM already has announced plans to close the plant permanently next summer when it shifts production of the cars to its facilities in Canada. About 2,600 active employees will lose their jobs when the Van Nuys plant is shut down.
