Great Western Buys Finance Unit: The Beverly Hills thrift’s consumer finance group agreed to buy the unit from First Union Corp., a Charlotte, N.C.-based bank. No terms were disclosed. The unit, which has $178 million in assets and operates in the Southeast, is involved in dealer finance lending, personal loans, home equity loans and insurance premium financing.
