An unidentified man was hit by a car and killed as he attempted to cross Interstate 8 in Mission Valley, authorities said Wednesday.
The man, believed to be in his late 50s to early 60s, was in the freeway’s eastbound lanes near the Interstate 15 overpass about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when he was hit by a car driven by Herbert Fernandez.
Fernandez, 77, of San Diego told California Highway Patrol officers that he was unable to avoid hitting the man. Fernandez was uninjured.
No car was found in the area, and authorities don’t know why the man was trying to cross the freeway. No identification was found on the victim.
The dead man was described as white, about 5-foot-9 and 210 pounds. He has hazel eyes, brown hair, is partly bald and has no teeth. He was wearing dark blue pants, a light yellow sweater with a zipper front, and a blue T-shirt with stars and red stripes.
