Cheney Looking to Pare Budget

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — Defense Secretary Dick Cheney said Wednesday that the Pentagon will pare its spending in future budgets and review war plans to account for the dramatic changes in the Soviet Union.
But Cheney also warned that growing pressure for deep cuts in military spending and a surging spirit of isolationism among Americans could pave the way for future attacks on U.S. interests.
En route to Hawaii, where he is to help mark the 50th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Saturday, Cheney stopped short of saying how much he would reduce military spending in 1993 and the five years beyond.
