An accident in which three people were slightly injured left 150 live African perch flopping on the Pomona Freeway near South El Monte on Thursday, authorities said.
In a chain-reaction accident at 12:30 p.m., a pickup truck with a flat tire caused traffic to slow abruptly, said Officer David Romero of the California Highway Patrol.
Then the stake-bed truck carrying the perch intended for restaurant use collided with two other vehicles, Romero said.
“Fish were flopping around all over the freeway,” CHP Sgt. Mike Brey said.
“Yes, it was smelly,” added Romero.
Two people who received minor injuries were taken to Greater El Monte Community Hospital, and a third refused treatment, authorities said. The freeway was cleared less than an hour afterward.
