OUTLOOK
Breslin was an assistant at Drake University last season and at Pepperdine the previous year. Before that, he spent seven years as a varsity assistant at Westlake High School. He inherits a program that needs some work. The Braves were 11-4 in nonleague games last season, then finished league play tied for last with Loyola. Of course, Breslin and the Braves got a break with the arrival of James Cotton, a transfer from Artesia. The muscular forward was a starter for the Pioneers, who reached the Southern California Regional Division II final. “We were very excited to have James come here,” Breslin said. “He’s an extremely talented player from a top-notch program. I don’t want to put too much pressure on him, but the rest of the team seems to play better when he’s around.” Cotton will get help from Samson, who finished well last season. Breslin said Samson is the strongest player on the team. The rest of the team, lacking experience, is a question mark. Breslin is high on Ramirez, who will likely start. However, it’s doubtful the Braves will be among the league’s top teams. “I think we’ve increased the year-round involvement,” Breslin said. “And I think our fall conditioning was at a higher pace then the kids were used to.” Translation: The Braves are at least a year away.
