OUTLOOK
The Comanches have plenty of openings. Dunning is the only player who has started a varsity game. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean hard times for Canyon. The junior varsity team went 18-4 and won the league title last season, giving Sabins hope for the future. “They’re a talented group, they just don’t have any varsity experience yet,” he said. “To tell you the truth, I just don’t know what to expect from them yet.” Part of Sabins’ confusion is due to injuries and other complications. Jalowiec and Judy are the team’s best shooters, but neither can play at the moment. Jalowiec, who is the quarterback on the football team, is recovering from a separated shoulder, and Judy is recuperating from surgery. Sabins said he wasn’t sure whether they would be ready to play when the season starts. Canyon has several strong inside players, none of whom has stepped forward yet. Sabins was hoping to have things squared away after the summer, but was disappointed with the team’s performance. “We really didn’t accomplish as much this summer as we have in the past,” he said. “We didn’t play one game with the entire team.”
