Just Plane Wrong

The depiction of the aircraft mounted outside the RAF Museum as a Spitfire (“War Museums Celebrate Britain’s Finest Hour,” Dec. 1) is incorrect. It is a Hurricane.
Perhaps the best-kept secret of the Battle of Britain was that the Hurricane took the brunt of this historic air conflict--while the Spitfire took all of the credit. Possibly this is an offshoot of our current vision that grace, speed and good looks take priority whenever a choice is to be made.

Editor’s note: The photo caption was indeed wrong. The plane shown in the foreground is a model of a Hawker Hurricane; a Spitfire stands in the background.
