Marcos Enters Plea of Not Guilty to Tax Fraud Charges

MANILA — Former Philippines First Lady Imelda Marcos pleaded not guilty to tax fraud charges today when she went on trial for the first time since returning from exile in the United States.
Shaking her head, she pleaded, “Not guilty” to each of seven tax fraud charges as they were read.
The once powerful wife of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos is battling the seven counts of tax evasion among a total of 80 criminal and civil charges filed her against by the government of President Corazon Aquino.
In theory, she faces a jail sentence of more than 400 years if convicted on all counts.
Marcos, 62, returned to the Philippines on Nov. 4 to face trial after nearly six years of exile in the United States.
