California IN BRIEF : NOVATO : Youth, 16, Ignores Police, Kills Self

A troubled teen-ager who had begged police to shoot him put a gun to his head and killed himself as neighbors and officers watched helplessly. When police arrived, the 16-year-old boy was standing in the street, holding a .22-caliber pistol at his head and demanding to be shot. The youth then fell to his knees and shot himself, Novato Police Cpl. Michael Pool said. The youth, who had lived in a Novato foster home, was taken to Novato Community Hospital where he died in surgery.
