OUTLOOK
Swanson, who coached the girls’ basketball team at Luther High in Orlando, Fla., the past nine years after playing professionally overseas for several seasons, takes over the Lancer boys’ program. He takes over without much knowledge of his team’s competition, but with a desire to get the boys off on the right foot. “I’m trying to make them into offensive players by teaching fundamentals before I put in any kind of an offensive plan,” Swanson said. “I’m trying to teach them to take advantage of what the defense gives them.” With an inexperienced group that includes only two returning starters--both second-team all-league selections last year--Swanson’s lessons undoubtedly will come in handy. Still, he says the team will hold its own in the tough Olympic League. “I think we’ll do fine,” Swanson said. “We’ll have to play smart, be in better shape than the other teams and play good defense.” Offensively, Swanson said the team is going to “run and push the ball up the court” with Gavin directing the attack. If their running game is stopped, however, Swanson said his half-court game will focus on taking advantage of the size of Mihr and Reed using a low- and high-post setup. Newcomer DeJesus has impressed Swanson. “He’s a little guy but scrappy and works hard,” Swanson said.
