A Vienna woman visiting California for the holidays died Thursday after her car was forced off the Ventura Freeway and into a concrete support pillar of the Moorpark Freeway overpass, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The 83-year-old woman, whose name was not released pending notification of her family, was driving north on the freeway in Thousand Oaks when the car was struck by a van driven by Carlos Rivera, 34, of Ventura, a CHP spokesman said.
The two vehicles spun out of control and onto the shoulder, where the woman’s car slammed sideways into the pillar, the spokesman said.
Capt. Wayne Michael of the Ventura Fire Department said paramedics administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation to the woman through the windshield and passenger window until firefighters could cut away the car’s roof and remove her.
She was taken to Los Robles Regional Medical Center, where she died 45 minutes later.
Rivera was not injured in the accident, which remains under investigation, the CHP said.
