HEALTHY GAINS: Despite the recession and a drop in corporate giving, UC Irvine’s private fund-raising effort this academic year is ahead of last year’s. As the halfway mark approaches, UCI has collected $13.5 million. Last year’s donations totaled $22.8 million. . . . “The gains this year are in individual giving and a huge jump in foundation giving,” says UCI’s Linda Granell. Gifts include $2 million recently donated by Joan Irvine Smith through a family foundation.
