See’s observation that “the Chinese in America have maintained a long-standing tradition of silence,” which Louie has a respect for, must be appreciated from another angle.
Louie only seems so. He, in actuality, is as silent as his elders have been vociferous, elders who were inarticulate immigrants. The Chinese for generations have had to resort to returning to their homeland to sire children who, on coming over to America, became a new crop of tongue-tied, fumbling immigrants.
Until now, the likes of Louie, a new breed able to string together English words, have been rare Chinese.
