State OKs Funds for Reinforcing 5 Freeway Bridges

The California Transportation Commission has approved spending $2.6 million to upgrade five bridges along the Long Beach Freeway (710).
One project, estimated to cost $2.07 million, will strengthen a box-girder bridge over the Los Angeles River in South Gate and a steel-girder bridge over the Hobart rail yard in Vernon and Commerce. The work involves adding steel reinforcement to bridge supports. Once completed, the spans will be able to accommodate the extra-heavy loads that are occasionally hauled on state highways under special permit.
A second project, estimated to cost $671,000, will upgrade railings on three bridges where the Long Beach Freeway crosses the Santa Ana Freeway (5) in Commerce. The new railings will be made of concrete reinforced with steel rods and will stand 32 inches high.
