Gannett Sells Some Newspapers: Gannett Co. sold its recently acquired five daily and 10 weekly Journal newspapers in suburban Washington for an undisclosed amount to a subsidiary of Newsco Inc. of Destin, Fla. A citizens group had petitioned the Federal Communications Commission to deny Gannett’s application to renew its license for WUSA-TV on grounds that the company owned both broadcasting and print outlets in the same area--Washington. Gannett said that without an FCC waiver, it would have had to reduce the number of days that Journal papers published under FCC rules on cross-ownership of media outlets in a single market. Gannett bought the papers last August.
