Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Judge’s Surgery Delays Noriega Trial

The drug-trafficking trial of former Panamanian dictator Manuel A. Noriega has been rescheduled to resume Jan. 27 because U.S. District Court Judge William M. Hoeveler had heart surgery, said a spokeswoman for the judge. Hoeveler, 69, had triple-bypass surgery Tuesday and is resting comfortably in Miami’s Mercy Hospital. His secretary, Janice Tinsman, said she has informed prosecution and defense attorneys to be ready by the new date. The trial had been scheduled to resume Jan. 6 after a Christmas recess.
