Seton Hall Shuts Down Garnes, Tops SDSU, 71-61

San Diego State’s leading scorer, Kieishsha Garnes, was held scoreless in the first half and finished with only nine points as the Aztecs fell to Seton Hall, 71-61, in a nonconference women’s basketball game Saturday night in South Orange, N.J.
Garnes, who had been averaging 21 points, shot only 4 of 15 from the field. SDSU took a 10-2 lead, but was outscored 10-0 and never regained the lead.
Falisha Wright led SDSU (5-3) with 19 points, including 15 in the second half. Michelle Suman added 13. Seton Hall improved to 7-1.
Sophomore forward Jill Shaver scored a career-high 24 points in University of San Diego’s 103-68 loss at second-ranked Stanford in a nonconference game. Shaver shot 11 of 19 from the field and grabbed five rebounds. Debbie Gollnick added 11 points for USD, which trailed at half 49-31.
Stanford was led by freshman Anita Kaplan’s career-high 21 points. Val Whiting added 19 points as the Cardinal improved to 9-0. The Toreras fell to 2-6.
UC San Diego’s frontline of Erica Scholl and Lisa Beaver dominated to give UC San Diego a 85-66 victory over Norwich (Conn.) in the first round of the three-day UCSD Classic. Scholl had 16 points and 11 rebounds Beaver had 13 points and 13 rebounds. UCSD (5-2) will play Concordia of Wisconsin (6-1) in tonight’s semifinals at 8.
