Toni Nieminen of Finland won the first of the season’s Four Hill ski jumping events with 229.9 points at Oberstdorf, Germany.
Nieminen, 16, whom experts have tabbed as the probable successor to four-time Olympic champion Matti Nykaenen of Finland, easily won the event using the “V”-jumping style to jump 387 3/4 feet and 366 3/8 feet. In second was Werner Rathmayer of Austria, scoring 218.0 points after jumps of 379 1/2 feet and 354 3/4 feet.
