‘A CARTON OF HOT AIR’
The major flaw in Deirdre English’s critique of Rickie Solinger’s “Wake Up Little Susie” (June 14) is that her mental vehicle seems half-loaded with empty boxes. Rummaging through hollow crates for any kind of substance is unproductive.
English does open some of her heavyweight containers for inspection. For example, birth-control devices, including abortion, should readily be available to all women.
A carton of hot air, however, is her depiction of married, two-parent families as no more affluent, stable, nurturing, spiritual or culturally desirable than are out-of-wedlock ones.
Falsely rationalizing illegitimacy to defend birth control backfires. It simply helps make the pro-life case.
