World IN BRIEF : YUGOSLAVIA : Collapse of Dam, Toxic Water Feared
- Share via
Thousands of Yugoslavs could be without drinking water unless repairs are made to a dam that threatens to spill toxic waste into the Danube River system, a U.N. official in Geneva said. If the structure collapsed, tons of poison sludge would slide into the Tara River and the network of rivers it feeds into, said Hans Zimmermann of the U.N. disaster relief office. The dam holds back 4.6 million cubic yards of waste from abandoned lead and zinc mines. The center section of the earthen dam in the Montenegrin mountains has been heavily eroded by high water and could collapse, Zimmermann said. In Brussels, the European Community granted $134,200 in aid for initial emergency repairs.
