Irish Vote on Abortion

DUBLIN, Ireland — The Irish agonized Wednesday over whether to relax Europe’s most rigid abortion law after an emotional debate pitting the Roman Catholic Church against women demanding a right to make their own moral decisions.
Ballots were cast for Parliament candidates and in a referendum asking whether abortion should be introduced in extremely rare cases.
The referendum poses two other questions--on the right to travel abroad for an abortion and the right to information at home on overseas abortion facilities. Polls indicate these will be passed easily. Official results are expected Friday.
