Phoenix Cardinal owner Bill Bidwill, whose team has not had a winning record since 1984, said Coach Joe Bugel and General Manager Larry Wilson will be retained.
Bugel, who had been in the last year of a four-year contract, has a 13-35 record in three seasons.
His last two teams have finished 4-12 and fallen off in the second half of the season, losing eight in a row to end 1991 and six of seven to finish 1992. But Bugel, 52, never thought he would be fired.
“I’ll be truthful with you: I had no doubts at all,” Bugel said. “Mr. Bidwill, he didn’t tell me a thing. I just came to work.”

Former Philadelphia Eagle Coach Buddy Ryan interviewed for the head coaching job with the New England Patriots on Friday, ESPN reported.
Ryan has been mentioned as a possible candidate to replace Dick MacPherson, who was fired by the Patriots last week.

Quarterback Don Majkowski underwent surgery on his throwing shoulder for the second time in two years.
Majkowski made three starts in 1992, the fewest in his six seasons with Green Bay, then lost his starting job to Brett Favre. He will be a free agent on Feb. 1.
