LOS ANGELES : 21 Students Expelled for Carrying Weapons, Replicas
- Share via
The Los Angeles school board voted to expel 21 students for bringing weapons to school, including eight caught with replicas of weapons.
Board member Jeff Horton opposed 14 of the expulsions, including the eight who brought gun replicas. “I’m not saying they should bring replica guns, but they didn’t deserve to be thrown out on the streets for bringing a replica gun.”
The board implemented the mandatory expulsion policy, which includes replica guns, after a 16-year-old Fairfax High School student was shot to death during his English class Jan. 21.
School board member Roberta Weintraub said she disagreed with Horton. “It’s getting rough out there, Jeff,” Weintraub said. “Guns kill. It doesn’t really matter what age you are.”
Supt. Sid Thompson said schools would start holding assemblies to warn students that some have been expelled for bringing replica guns to campus.
