Esperanza’s Curran Honored by Coaches’ Group

Esperanza’s Mike Curran is one of eight high school baseball coaches to be named a 1993 District Coach of the Year by the National High School Baseball Coaches Assn.
Curran, representing District 8, is a finalist for the national coach of the year award, which will be announced at the BCA’s annual convention Dec. 4 in Schaumburg, Ill.
Curran has coached the Aztecs for the past 14 years, winning six Empire league championships and three Southern Section titles, the latest being last season’s Division I championship.

Mitch McCoy of Newport Harbor has made an oral commitment to play volleyball at UC Santa Barbara, Charlie Brande, his club coach, said Tuesday.
McCoy, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter, was named first-team All--Southern Section Division I last season. He is a three-year starter for the Sailors.
