Nissan Buys Back Vans: Because it would have cost the auto maker too much money to make them road-worthy again, Carson-based Nissan Motor Corp. U.S.A so far has bought back 900 of its 1987-90 vans from owners. Nissan announced its fourth recall for 33,000 1987-90 vans to extensively modify cooling systems to prevent severe overheating and engine compartment fires. The company said it knows of more than 150 fires, but not all may be related. If Nissan’s regional offices agree with dealers that the cost of repairs is more than the vehicle is worth, owners have the option to take a cash settlement equal to the cost of the repairs, including the cost of the recall, the company said.
