SIMI VALLEY : City Weighs Joining Pilot Bus System

The Simi Valley City Council tonight will consider joining a pilot program for a countywide bus system that would provide direct service between Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks for the first time.
The two-year program, approved by the County Board of Supervisors, will establish four new bus lines connecting cities in Ventura County and western Los Angeles County.
The bus service, called Ventura Intercity Transit Authority, or VISTA, will replace Interconnect, the county’s existing service. Interconnect does not serve Simi Valley, which operates its own bus system within the city and an hourly bus to Chatsworth.
Nearly 90% of the cost of the service will be covered by federal grants. The rest will be divided among the county and cities sharing the service. The cost to Simi Valley is estimated at about $20,000 a year.
Mayor Greg Stratton said he hoped that the system would eventually take over the city’s Chatsworth line.
