Grand Ayatollah Mohammad-Reza Golpaygani, 98, a spiritual leader of the world’s 200 million Shiite Muslims. Golpaygani was a frequent critic of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, patriarch of Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution. He opposed the takeover and redistribution of land under Khomeini, but was considered to be close to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Khomeini’s successor as Iran’s spiritual leader. In Tehran on Thursday.
