Red Ink at Libraries

An article Dec. 18 noted that $11,000 has been donated thus far by property owners to the Ventura County library system. The article said county Librarian Dixie D. Adeniran “is satisfied with the amount raised.” Supervisor Maggie Kildee said, “I’m very pleased. . . . It shows that people really care about the libraries.”
But $11,000 in response to 214,000 property tax bills is about 5 cents per property tax bill. I suggest that these people in positions of policy-making and administrative leadership could improve their perspectives after revisiting their arithmetic, to the benefit of the library system, presently on the ropes.
