U.S. Sets Strategy on Beijing Trade Status: The United States may consider selective withdrawal of trade benefits from China’s state-owned enterprises instead of a broader sanction if Beijing fails to show enough human rights progress, a top official said. Assistant Secretary of State Winston Lord, speaking to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said a targeted withdrawal of Most Favored Nation trade status would be aimed at lessening the impact of the action on U.S. business and other “innocent bystanders,” such as Hong Kong and Taiwan.
