Elizabeth Shea, who police say was shot and wounded at an automated teller machine by Mark Richard Hilbun as he went on a deadly two-day crime spree, has filed a lawsuit against Hilbun and Wells Fargo Bank.
The lawsuit, filed last week in Orange County Superior Court, alleges that the bank failed to provide adequate security. Wells Fargo officials said they had no comment Friday.
Shea, 29, was one of five people allegedly shot by Hilbun in May, 1993. Shea’s companion, Jim Brown, 44, also was wounded in the midnight shooting, which occurred at a Wells Fargo branch on Slater Avenue in Fountain Valley.
Hilbun is also charged with stabbing his 63-year-old mother to death in her Corona del Mar home and of fatally shooting a letter carrier at the Dana Point post office.
According to police, Hilbun, 40, was fired from the Dana Point post office for stalking Kim Springer, another postal employee, with whom authorities say Hilbun was infatuated.
Authorities say manic depression has been diagnosed in Hilbun, who is in custody awaiting trial on various charges including murder and attempted murder.
Shea’s lawsuit seeks $1 million from each defendant, including unnamed ones.
