Top-ranked Cal Poly Pomona defeated UC Davis, 5-3, to advance to the finals of the NCAA Division II women’s tennis tournament at the Industry Hills Sheraton Resort Saturday.
Pomona (21-1-1) will play North Florida (24-3) for the championship at noon today. North Florida beat fourth-seeded Grand Canyon in the other semifinal.
The Broncos, who can win their fifth title and their third in four years, were seeded third despite being the top team in the Division II polls. North Florida was seeded No. 1, defending champion Davis No. 2.
Davis and Pomona were tied, 3-3, after singles play. But Pomona won the first two doubles matches to win. Twins Bee and Beam Amesbutr teamed up for one of Pomona’s doubles victories. It was the first time they played as a team this season.
Davis (14-9) will play Grand Canyon (20-4) at 1:30 for third place.
