* * * * Hank Jones, “Upon Reflection,” Verve. This sublime recording reunites the wondrous Jones musical family: the great pianist Hank performing on record for the first time in decades with his younger brother, drummer Elvin, playing the tunes of their late sibling, Thad. Such favorites as “A Child Is Born” and “Mean What You Say” and never-before-heard goodies such as the title track are given seamless, elegant interpretations. Hank’s subtly opulent sound, issuing dancer-like lines of even, glossy notes, is backed by George Mraz’s plump beat and Elvin’s whooshy brush work--he never picks up a stick. A classic.
Albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good, recommended), four stars (excellent).
