South Gate 40, Marshall 6--The Rams used a strong running game and capitalized on Marshall penalties to open their City Section season with a lopsided victory.
Tailbacks Hoffman Cortes and Jesus Ramirez led the Rams’ rushing attack. Cortes had 107 yards in six carries, including a 45-yard touchdown run, and Ramirez accounted for 63 yards on 9 carries and one touchdown.
“This is very important for us to get off to a good start,” said Coach Gary Cordray, whose Rams finished 3-6 last season. “We have a lot of guys that came back, and our running game is as strong as expected.”
Running back Anthony Martin was the only bright spot for Marshall, rushing for 79 yards in 15 carries with one touchdown. The Barristers were penalized 14 times for 78 yards.
