No Change in Auto Tariff Plans, Official Says: Australian Industry Minister Peter Cook said the government is sticking to plans to reduce tariffs on imported cars to 15% by the year 2000, according to Australian newspaper reports. The affirmation came in response to persistent speculation that two car makers--Ford Australia and General Motors-Holden’s--are actively lobbying for tariffs no lower than 25%. Under the current tariff-reduction plan, tariffs on imported cars are being cut by 2.5 percentage points a year from the original 45%.
