When a congressional candidate in Nebraska campaigned at an Omaha high school, students assumed they could ask whatever they wanted and get straight answers. They were wrong.
Some students working on the candidate’s campaign had been given prepared questions to ask and were told to hold pens when they raised their hands so the candidate would know to call on them.
The plan backfired when a teacher and some other students found out. Those students also clutched pens when they raised their hands to confuse the candidate.
“If he can’t stand up to a roomful of 17-year-olds, how is he going to stand up to the U.S. Congress?” one student asked.
Campaign officials said they planted the questions to prepare the candidate for his first debate.
