ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia — Eight months after the execution of a resident who murdered 52 people, authorities in this southern Russian city are searching once again for a serial killer.
Police believe the culprit has already slain eight women in two rural districts of the Rostov region, the Itar-Tass news agency reported on Thursday.
Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that more than one killer is at work, said Col. Vasily Kolesnik, the region’s chief criminal investigator.
The city won notoriety as home of the so-called “Rostov Ripper,” a former teacher and Communist Party member who terrorized the region for 12 years before he was arrested in 1990.
Andrei Chikatilo was convicted of murdering, mutilating and cannibalizing 21 boys, 14 girls and 17 older women. Chikatilo was executed in Rostov-on-Don in February.
