A county advisory committee to plan for a commercial airport at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station recently appointed four new members and is extending the application period for two additional seats.
The El Toro Airport Citizens Advisory Commission was created by the county Board of Supervisors in response to the passage of Measure A in November.
The measure calls for a commercial airport at the Marine Corps base after it closes in 1999.
Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. today and can be faxed to Janice Mittermeier, director, John Wayne Airport, (714) 252-5178.
The committee currently has nine members, including five city officials and four recently appointed community representatives, including developer George Argyros, a backer of Measure A. Other new members include aviation experts Neil Bennett and Gary Proctor and labor representative Michael Potts.
The two open seats are reserved for members of “established community groups” involved in airport issues.
The commission will meet Thursday in the John Wayne Airport Terminal Room to interview applicants and appoint the two additional community representatives.
