HACIENDA HEIGHTS: A woman with a gunshot wound to the head was found Monday morning alongside Turnbull Canyon Road near the Whittier city limits, said Los Angeles County sheriff’s detectives. The woman, in her mid-20s, was still breathing when she was spotted by a jogger about 11:30 a.m. She was airlifted to a hospital but died a short time afterward. She has not been identified, and authorities said they have no leads.

ROWLAND HEIGHTS: An unarmed Rowland Heights Unified School District police officer was shot and wounded in the hip about 8:30 a.m. Sunday by a youth who had been acting suspiciously near a school, a sheriff’s deputy said. Officer Mark Russell, 29, was attempting to search the youth when the teen-ager pulled a gun and shot him, Sheriff’s Deputy Rich Erickson said. Russell managed to get in his patrol car and chase the fleeing youth, but the suspect escaped.

SAN GABRIEL: A 17-year-old San Gabriel youth was arrested Monday on suspicion of beating a woman to death. The youth, whose name was withheld because of his age, was charged with the murder of Rebecca Wojatacki, 45, whose body was found April 24.
