World IN BRIEF : UKRAINE : Sewage Breakdown Cuts Water Supply

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A breakdown in the sewage treatment system in Ukraine’s second-largest city, unrepaired for 10 days, has cut off all water supplies to its 1.5 million residents and shut down industry, officials said. Navy divers flown to the eastern city of Kharkov were trying to clear sewage from containment vessels at two water purification units knocked out during heavy rains. Authorities were trying to double a fleet of 130 trucks bringing water to residents.
