Top-Seeded Players Win in Irvine Tennis

IRVINE — Top-seeded Steven Welch of Arlington, Tex., defeated Torsten Purschke of Germany, 7-5, 6-2, Wednesday in the third round of the U.S. Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships at the Racquet Club of Irvine.
Oceanside’s Jim Black defeated Martin Legner of Austria, 2-6, 6-0, 6-1, and second-seeded David Hall of Australia also won to advance to Friday’s quarterfinals. The tournament concludes Sunday.
Top-seeded Monique Kalkman and second-seeded Chantal Vandierendonck, both from The Netherlands, posted second-round victories in the women’s open division.
