Jim Bailey, founder of the Orange County Centennial Farm, has won an education award from the California Assn. of Nurserymen’s Orange County chapter for his commitment to agricultural and horticultural education.
Bailey was a Sunny Hills High agriculture teacher for 31 years before founding the farm, which is on the Orange County Fairgrounds, in 1989. He works as the farm’s livestock supervisor.
He said he built the farm, which features crops, nursery stock and livestock, for children who might otherwise not know anything about agriculture. About 40,000 schoolchildren tour the farm annually.
“Education is my first love,” said Bailey, a Fullerton resident. “That’s why the farm was started, to bring education and agriculture together.”
