UC Santa Barbara Defeats Long Beach

Despite getting 29 points from Akia Hardy, Long Beach State lost to UC Santa Barbara, 77-74, in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game Sunday in Long Beach.
Hardy, a senior guard, made 11 of 17 shots from the field, including four of six three-point attempts. Tomika Cantley had 16 for Long Beach (15-12, 10-8), which finished fifth in the conference.
Dio Aguinaldo scored 19 for UC Santa Barbara (22-5, 17-1), the conference champion.
Long Beach plays Pacific at 6 p.m. Thursday in the opening round of the conference tournament in Reno.
In a nonconference baseball game:
Ohio State 8, Long Beach State 1--The visiting Buckeyes (4-3) scored six times in the second inning to open a 6-1 lead. Phil Vogelmeier (1-0) pitched a four-hitter and the first-inning run he gave up was unearned for Ohio State.
Jason Hodges had a single and drove in a run for Long Beach State (12-7).
