BRITAIN : Activists Report ’58 Nuclear Accident

Anti-nuclear activists said they have evidence that a 1958 accident spread nuclear contamination across a densely populated area of southern England. Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament spokesman Eddie Goncalves said an airborne B-47 bomber developed engine trouble and jettisoned fuel tanks, which missed a drop zone at Greenham Common Air Base and landed 65 feet behind a parked B-47 equipped with nuclear weapons. The resulting fire released radioactive material, he alleged. Britain’s Ministry of Defense denied that nuclear material was involved.
