Time Settles With Reporter: The New York-based magazine agreed to pay $270,000 to a former Moscow bureau chief for Washington Post to settle a libel suit stemming from a Time story that accused him of taking bribes from the KGB. Time magazine issued a statement of apology to be published in its Aug. 19 issue and apologized to Dusko Doder, agreeing to pay his court costs on top of the damages. The Dec. 28, 1992, Time article reported that Vitaly Yurchenko, a former high-ranking Soviet official who had defected to the United States, said Doder had taken money from the former Russian secret police and intelligence agency. The Time statement Thursday said: “To the extent the article may have been read to reflect adversely on Doder’s reputation and integrity, Time withdraws such reflection without reservation and apologizes to Doder for any distress that may have been caused.”
