Gawking motorists tied up northbound traffic for miles on the Ventura Freeway through Ventura on Tuesday after a police cruiser and another car collided on a frontage road and slid into a 7-foot-deep drainage ditch.
Two cadets running an errand in the police car and the driver of the other car were treated for minor injuries at Ventura hospitals and released, authorities said.
A car driven by John Chamberlin, 35, of Ventura and the patrol car occupied by Aaron Triana, 20, and Julie Greenleaf, 21, collided about 1 p.m. on Walker Street, which runs parallel to the freeway north of Victoria Avenue, police said.
The police car spun 180 degrees, plunged through a wire mesh fence and fell on its side into the dry concrete drainage channel, police said.
Both vehicles sustained major damage.
