WASHINGTON — Farmers in Delaware, New Jersey and Virginia may use a new pesticide to control mites in apples, the Environmental Protection Agency said Friday.
It was the first EPA decision made under the Food Quality Protection Act, signed into law this month, which sets new health standards for pesticide use.
The EPA approved the emergency use of pyridaben through September. The action came after Uniroyal Chemical Co. agreed in April to quit selling propargite for use on apples and other crops because of a cancer risk.
