Responsibility for Drownings

Re “Couple Whose Baby Drowned Are Freed Pending Court Date,” Aug. 15:
It’s about time we start holding these parents responsible for the drowning deaths of young children. Every summer, local law enforcement agencies warn parents of the dangers of unattended children around swimming pools and possible drowning situations.
The attorney for the family claims that [the arrest] adds “insult to injury.” He also states that the drowning was an accident. When children are properly supervised by their parents, accidents do not occur; it is only when parents are careless that these accidents happen.
How many young children will continue to suffer in an accidental drowning while parents sit by and allow it to happen? I say no more. Maybe this attorney would not be so eager to defend the actions of these parents if he were thrown to the bottom of a pool and could experience the life being sucked out of him as this young child did.
